These posts may not be the most interesting to read (or, too consuming of dictionary-page-flipping time to fully enjoy), but, well, there's still more to the series, and I might as well keep it going.

I actually think I remember seeing gormless on one of my forgotten English calendars ... can't remember what it means, though. hat do elytron, pococurante, verisimilitude, quacksalver and allochthonous mean?
ReplyDeleteelytron: one of the pair of hardened forewings of certain insects, as beetles, forming a protective covering for the posterior or flight wings.
Deletepococurante: a careless or indifferent person. (or as an adjective)
verisimilitude: the appearance or semblance of truth.
quacksalver: a quack doctor.
allochthonous: (of rocks, deposits, etc) found in a place other than where they or their constituents were formed.
Those are so cool.
DeleteOh, it makes sense that verisimilitude has something to do with truth, since it has the 'veri' part in it (ex. Verity, Veritaserum [the truth potion from Harry Potter[)
