New Fan Fiction Idea #7

Working Title: The Bard Games

Fandom: Shakespeare and Hunger Games crossover

Genre Tags: I never know how to label HG works. Let's say Horror/Suspense.

Length: Long multichapter

Protagonist: Othello Moor (District 11)

Other Main Characters: Romeo Montague (District 3)
Hamlet Prince (District 5)
Ophelia (District 5)
Macbeth Findlay (District 6)
Antonio Venis (District 8), volunteering for Bassanio
Portia Belmont (District 8)
Nerissa (District 9)
Desdemona (District 10)
Cleopatra Feyra (District 11)

Antagonists: Our Career pack consists of
Caesar Julius (District 1)
Lady McBeth (District 1)
Antony (District 2)
Brutus (District 4)
Juliet Capulet (District 4)
Others with a clearly negative role in the story are
Iago Ensign (District 10)
Shylock (District 12)

Plot: A Hunger Games, from reapings to final kill, plus an epilogue. It's going to be one of the earlier Games.

Setting: A large, polygonal arena. It is split down the middle by a river (with a few rickety wooden bridges); on one side is ground, the other a wooden jungle-gym of sorts. The wooden part inclines, with the river side being the lowest and the edge of the arena being the highest. The section is split into nine rectangles (as in an octothorpe) with each rectangle containing a different type of wood. The other side of the arena is flat ground, rather muddy, for a stretch  but eventually leads to a three-storey sort of loft area. Also wooden, the area starts with a ground layer with decent barriers and, through a single ladder, leads up to two more levels, each less stable than the last. Various mutts, edible and otherwise plants, and traps dot the arena. The Cornucopia is just to the ground side of the river.

Point of View: First-person, switching between each of the 24 tributes as appropriate.

I'm really looking forward to this one, although my cast list is incomplete, and I'll have to read more Shakespeare to fill it out. A reread of Macbeth could be nice, too. I still need to come up with surnames for a lot of the characters.

Protagonist assignment is arbitrary. At this point it seems Othello's alliance is going to get a good bit of screen time.

Still working out the setting, although the basic form is going to stay the same.

  1. Oh, so you're still going to write this one! I'm glad to hear that; it excites me greatly (although it most likely won't become part of my headcanon). I love how the arena almost sounds like it's based off an Elizabethan-era theatre (I'm not sure if that's the intent, but that's the impression I got.) The wooden jungle-gym idea offers so many possibilities for hiding places and death traps!

The cast list intrigues me. I can't see any clear winner yet, though the Careers, of course, seem like they'd be more successful. I'm guessing Iago, Desdemona and Othello are going to form an alliance, only for Iago to trick them into turning on each other. Brutus will probably overthrow Caesar at one point. The prospect of a villainous Juliet is also very interesting, especially if she'll fall in love with district-goer Romeo.

If you're looking for more characters to fill up empty spaces, you can always just use a bunch of minor people (servants, clowns, etc.) who would die in the bloodbath. Like, Macduff's son could be a random 12-year-old who Macbeth kills at the start of the Games.

    1. Yeah, I decided to just move all of my fan fiction ideas here from my profile.

'Tis indeed~ And the segments of the wooded section are downstage right, centre stage, etc. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it would work, especially to have any mobility or places to lie down a while.

Your assumptions are correct... for the most part. And how could I not have Juliet fall in love with Romeo? ;) I thought one of them needed to be a Career to have a proper equivalent to the rivalry, and I chose her (mostly because her last name starts with "C." I'm so creative).

I'm trying to decide how many major characters I'm going to want. I know two on this list (possibly three) are going to die in the bloodbath, so I'm trying to see what kind of size of bloodbath I'll want. I think my Careers are going to be pretty competent, so maybe I should go with your idea.

I also kind of wanted a wider cross-section of Shakespeare stories, but I may have enough research on my hands already. At any rate, this will have to wait until June at least, so I won't worry about it too much just yet.

    2. Well, as for places to lie down and rest, there could just be flat platforms. Or you could incorporate actual props from the plays, except make them Hunger Games-y, like instead of Juliet's balcony, there could be a crumbling stone parapet type-thingy with vines creeping across it. Instead of the curtains on an actual stage, there could be tattered, cobwebby or blood-stained curtains hanging down and obscuring hiding places or secret passageways. There could be old pillars, almost like a dilapidated Roman senate, for the career camp (just suggestions, of course).

The Career/district person rivalry for Romeo and Juliet makes sense, especially as, in the play, the Capulets seemed to be the more aggressive of the two housholds (Tybalt, and the two servants at the beginning starting a brawl). It's kind of like a reverse-gender Sheen and Feli situation, especially since I may or may not have cast them in those roles when writing a crossover myself... (it was just a stupid little "Brutal cast does Romeo and Juliet!" thing, so I'm not stealing your ideas, don't worry.)

Well, there are a lot of plays out there. I'm sure you'll find someone!

    3. Ooh, interesting. Now that I'm getting more of a feel for the scale of it, it's easier to see how it might work.

Ah, I suppose so. (It's been forever since I've read R&J.)

Any suggestions for the D2F Career?

    4. The District 2 female, hmm ... well, some Shakespearean villainesses include Goneril and Reagan from King Lear and Tamora from Titus Andronicus, so you could use one of them.

    5. Cool. I'll reorder my Shakespeare reading list to hit them sooner.
